Massive water main break floods street near UCLA

Authorities say a water main has broken near the UCLA campus, spewing water into the air and stranding cars and people in underground parking structures.

Television news reports show an immense geyser of water surging from the middle of the street on Sunset Boulevard. Streets on and near campus are flooded and fast-moving sheets of water are pouring down the entrance of one parking structure and into campus athletic fields near Pauley Pavilion.

TV reports also show a car surrounded by muddy water up to the wheel wells and students wading through ankle-deep water.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey says fire crews have helped at least three stranded motorists.

There’s no word on what caused the break.
