Fire at old Sam’s Club building in La Quinta
The old Sam’s Club building in La Quinta caught fire around 11:00 Sunday morning.
CAL FIRE reports the two alarm fire sent flames shooting through the roof of the vacant warehouse.
Many News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 viewers could see the smoke all the way from Palm Springs on the 10 freeway.
The entrance to the shopping center on Dune Palm was shut down while crews fought the blaze.
“The fire appears to have started in the mechanical area and spread to the surface of the roof. It’s a very difficult area to access, very stubborn,” said CAL FIRE Battalion Chief Rick Griggs.
Cal Fire says there was only exterior damage. Crews will stay on the scene for several hours.
The under performing warehouse store closed in 2010 and has been vacant ever since.
