Deputies investigate officer-involved shooting in Indio
Officials from the Riverside County Sheriff Department are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Indio Thursday night.
The incident began in Coachella around 6:53 p.m. when Sheriff deputies responded to reports of a male discharging a firearm on the 49600 block of Harrison Street. During the investigation 40 year-old, Mario Soto Campana, a Coachella resident was identified as a possible suspect involved in this incident.
While conducting the investigation officers discovered that a fire had erupted at a residence believed to be Campana’s residence. The fire department responded to the scene and extinguished the fire. Further investigation revealed that Campana fled the scene in a vehicle prior to officers contacting him.
The suspect’s vehicle description was broadcast to local law enforcement agencies. Shortly thereafter an unoccupied vehicle matching the suspect’s was located in the city of Indio by one of their police officers. While in the area an Indio Police Officer attempted to contact Campana and was subsequently involved in an officer involved shooting.
The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m.
According to deputies, the Indio Police Department was called to Dr. Carreon Boulevard and Via Sorrento to a report of a man with a gun. An officer attempted to stop a man in the area who matched Campana’s description, police say he pulled out a handgun, leading to the officer-involved shooting.
Campana was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center and is in stable condition, according to the sheriff’s release.
No officers were injured. The officer who was involved in the shooting was placed on paid administrative leave.
Dr. Carreon Blvd was closed in both directions from Oasis Street to Via Sorrento for several hours while authorities investigated. There was still a portion or road closed Friday morning but it didn’t affect through-traffic.
