Coachella Valley Water District suggests ways to save water
On April 1, Governor Jerry Brown asked some Californians to cut water use by 35 percent. The Coachella Valley Water District met Tuesday to talk about how it plans to achieve that.
Patti Reyes of CVWD talked about the progress it’s made even before the new mandate went into effect.
“Between 2003 and 2014 we have reduced per capita water use by 26 percent,” said Reyes.
But, it’s not enough. Some of the suggestions she presented to cut water use include:
Limit outdoor watering.
Ban misters in public.
Encourage HOA’s to adopt water restrictions.
Prohibit hosing down driveways and sidewalks.
Remove turf along roadways.
Valley residents also shared ways to save water.
“My team and I have been doing ‘desertscape’ for the past few years and my clients rave about not only their savings on their water bill, but also their contribution to the environment.,” said Michel Goldman of Cathedral City.
One resident argued there’s not much more that can be done on his part to save water.
The meeting also focused on the challenges to calculating water use.
“The challenge for us has been the calculation does not include any impact for weather and we’ve had a hot year,” explained Reyes. “Also, it doesn’t include any adjustments for population increases.”
No decisions will be made on the actions discussed Tuesday until the board meets again on April 28. The board also scheduled a brainstorming session for May 27.
