Residents displaced after 2 homes catch fire in La Quinta
Cal Fire has contained a fire in La Quinta that charred two homes Monday afternoon. The fire ignited around 3:05 p.m. in the 52-400 block of Avenida Diaz, near Calle Sonora, according to fire officials.
Firefighters said two homes were on fire when they arrived to the scene. Investigators determined both fires started in the garages of the homes.
Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garages in about 15 minutes, saving the remainder of the homes. When firefighters first arrived, there was concern over the fire spreading to homes north of the area.
Officials said residents of the homes evacuated themselves before fire engines arrived. Nobody was injured.
Two adults living in one of the homes were displaced and they made their own arrangements for where they’ll be staying in the meantime. Fire officials said they’re waiting to meet with the residents of the other home to determine if they’ll need assistance during the displacement.
Officials said the fire caused significant damage to both garages and the loss to each home is estimated at $50,000, bringing the total to $100,000.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 will bring you updates as more information makes it to our newsroom.
