Coachella Valley students compete in Math Day
Students from 15 Coachella Valley schools competed in the 21st Annual Rotary Math Field Day at John Glenn Middle School.
Three hundred students participated in events like mental gymnastics, calculator challenges, and 3D tic-tac-toe.
“They love to compete, they love to use their skills, so in the assembly when they get the awards they are cheering each other on, high-fiving each other,” says Steve Morgan, President of the Indio Rotary Club, “they love it, they appreciate themselves and working with each other.”
The event is to encourage students to study and enjoy math. It is to motivate students to develop and apply their math skills. Math Field Day challenges students to use their math knowledge and wit to solve problems. As a reward for their participation and effort they win prizes and recognition for themselves and their school.
Students are in grades six through eight, and many prepare for months to compete.
Some winners won money, others won trophies and titles like “Top Mathematician.”
