Man busted after trying to sneak heroin into U.S.
El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a suspected drug smuggler Tuesday morning after discovering nearly seven pounds of heroin hidden in the frame rail of his car.
According to agents, the 23-year-old U.S. citizen was stopped at the Highway 86 checkpoint at 10:30 a.m. He was driving a 2005 Pontiac G6. A Canine Detection Team alerted agents to the car.
Authorities found four packages of heroin wrapped in tape concealed in the frame rail of the Pontiac. The heroin weighed 6.9 lbs. and is estimated to be worth $82,800, officials said in the release.
The DEA took custody of the suspect, narcotics and the car.
Supervisory Border Patrol Agent Joyce Golosino with the El Centro Sector Field Communications Branch said, “This seizure is yet another example of our agents’ continual vigilance and dedication to the performance of their duties. Because of their outstanding efforts a very dangerous drug will never make it to our streets.”
Last year, El Centro Sector agents seized more than 186.5 lbs. of heroin.
