Fire leaves 28 people without a home in Indio

Cal Fire reports 28 people, 19 families total, are without a home Sunday after a fire broke out at the Smoketree apartments in Indio Saturday night.

The fire sparked just before 10:15 p.m. at the apartment complex on Avenue 48 and Monroe Street. Cal Fire says the first arriving crew could see heavy fire and smoke through the roof of the second floor.

The apartment building was evacuated as was nearby buildings.

Twelve units of the 16-unit building were affected and the roof collapsed. Fortunately nobody was hurt. The Red Cross is assisting 14 of the families with a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
