Neighbors frightened after armed home invasion
Two men are on the loose Thursday after they broke into a home in a gated community in La Quinta Tuesday morning.
One of the men held the homeowner, at gunpoint and took a purse and a computer.
It happened at a home on the 44-700 block of Via Rosa in La Quinta Del Oro near Miles and Washington streets.
Elsie Hewling lives near the home that was broken into and said if it happened to her she would move.
We spoke with the homeowner who did not want to go on camera, fearing another attack.
Hewling said the fact it happened in the morning troubles her the most.
“I did hear noises at the house that it happened at and they were speaking in Spanish, I didn’t think anything of it. I just thought it was a pool man . But minutes later about five police cars showed up with guns drawn,” Hewling said.
Hewling said just because you live in a gated community doesn’t mean you’re untouchable.
“Anyone can try to get in behind a car that has permission to be in here or if they know the gate code,” Hewling said.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said be aware of your surroundings.
“Neighbors you should know who should be in the community and who should not. If you see any vehicles that are suspicious or people contact your local law enforcement,” Deputy Armando Munoz said.
There is a sketch of what one of the suspects looks like.
The first suspect is described as a Hispanic man, 25 to 35 years old, with dark hair, wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.
The other is described as an unknown Hispanic man.
While the investigation continues Hewling said she’s taking extra precautions.
“We are making sure that we’re totally locked up at night, with the alarm system on. And we have a loaded gun if we need it,” Hewling said.
