Pedestrian hit and killed in Palm Springs

UPDATE: 7:47 a.m.

Harry Pedersen, a 79-year-old man from Canada, died after he was hit by a car last night.Dark roads and jaywalking may have contributed to the collision.

East Palm Canyon is open.

ORIGINAL STORY:

A man died after a car struck him in Palm Springs Monday evening.

Police say the man appeared to have been walking northbound across the westbound lanes of East Palm Canyon Drive between Deepwell Road and South Indian Trail, when he was hit by a car traveling westbound.

It happened just before 7:00 p.m. in a dark stretch of roadway.

Palm Springs Police said the man died at the scene, and was not in a crosswalk when he was struck.

The driver of the Toyota Camry remained on the scene, but was later taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Witnesses said traffic was being diverted around the Ace Hotel near Elmers.

Police expected the westbound lanes of East Palm Canyon Drive to be closed at Arguilla Road and the eastbound lanes to be closed at Deepwell Road for several hours while the investigation continued.
