Two hikers rescued from Mt. San Jacinto
UPDATE: 7:56 a.m.
Greg Purdy from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway confirms to News Channel 3 the two hikers made it safely down the 6:30 a.m. tram with the rangers.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Two hikers were safe Wednesday morning, but forced to spend the night at the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway after getting lost on Mount San Jacinto overnight.
California State Parks got a call from the two Indiana men near the mountain’s peak late yesterday afternoon around 4:30 p.m.
One hiker was 51, the other 39.
Authorities say they took the tram to Long Valley, then walked up to the peak.
The two then lost the trail when heading back down the mountain.
They called for help with a cell phone and hunkered down.
A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department helicopter crew found the hikers at 7:15 p.m., but could not get them out.
So a rescue team hiked in and walked the two back to the tram’s Mountain Station where they spent the night.
They were waiting for the first tram car to take them back down the mountain Wednesday morning at 6:30 a.m.
No one was hurt.
