LAX & PSP step up security following terror attacks
Tuesday, officials at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and train stations across the area ramped up security in response to the Belgium terror attacks.
Security is also being stepped up at Palm Springs International Airport.
Tom Nolan, Palm Springs International Airport Director, said elevated security measures have been put in place, but they won’t requirebringing in any outside law enforcement agencies, and won’t cause any interruptions in air service.
The attacks at the international airport and subway station in Brussels killed more than 30 people, and left many injured.
LAX Airport spokeswoman Alicia Hernandez saidthe departmentincreased its visual presence at the airport, and is readying rapid deploymentstrategies.
“We take attacks on aviation very seriously,” Hernandez said,promising they will “make adjustments to security as necessary.”
There were no impacts to flight operations at LAX.
Increased armed guards were noticeable at Union Station in downtown LosAngeles and at other Metro stations, including the Metro Blue Line’s Rosa Parksstation in Willowbrook and the Seventh Street/Metro Center station at Seventhand Figueroa.
“Metro and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Transit PolicingDivision are aware of the terrorist strikes in Belgium and are monitoring thesituation closely,” according to Metro. “While we maintain a high state ofreadiness at all times, we will be increasing security.”
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Ramon Montenegro said there is no tangible threat to any transit system in Los Angeles.
