Hundreds ‘Run for Ike’ in Palm Springs

Hundreds of people turned out to honor the memory of Palm Springs Police Department K-9 officer Ike on Saturday.

It was a morning of exercise and learning at the annual Run For Ike 5K at the Palm Springs Police Department.

This is the sixth year in which the 5K run and walk was held in memory of Ike. The K-9 was killed during a shootout in 2011.

Detective Luciano Colantuono said he will never forget his partner and companion.

“It was devastating. I mean, I still miss him every day its still a touchy nerve. Any K9 handler that’s lost a partner in the line of duty understands,” said Colantuono.

The department also held a public safety display to go along with the run.

Community members had the opportunity to chat with police officers and take a closer look at equipment they use in the line of duty.
