Hundreds show support for autism awareness

Hundreds of community members came together Saturday in support of autism awareness at the second annual autism walk in Palm Desert.

All a part of Autism Awareness Month, families got to enjoy a day of health and fun, raising money for the Coachella Valley Autism Society of America, or CVASA.

Organizers said funds raised Saturday will help with various support groups and outreach.

“We provide support groups and therapy groups for our families and for kids. And we just started a new music therapy group once a month and it’s for ages 3 to 10. And it’s a great opportunity for parents to interact with their kids and get on the floor. And it’s a great way for the kids to interact with their peers and just being socially appropriate,” said Thomas Lister Looker, president of CVASA.

Experts said many people are autistic or know someone on the spectrum.
