Vector control 5K race warns community of dangerous mosquito species

The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District hosted it’s first 5K run, “Fight the Bite” at the La Quinta Civic Center Park on Sunday, April 17.

The event kicked off Mosquito Control Awareness Week aimed at educating the community on safe practices and prevention of manmade mosquito breeding grounds.

The District is particularly concerned with invasive black and white mosquito species that have taken up residency in the areas surrounding the Coachella Valley. They are known for carrying diseases such as zika, chikungunya, and dengue.

District representatives advise dumping or draining still standing water in outdoor locations, like dog bowls, planter saucers, and even swimming pools. Wearing long sleeves and covering exposed skin with repellent is also recommended.

To report sightings of the black and white mosquito, contact The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District by calling(760) 342-8287 or emailing cvmosquito@cvmvcd.org.
