High winds, pounding surf hit Southern California

Swimmers and surfers are warned of dangerous surf and rip currents, while boaters could confront rough seas as powerful winds buffet many areas of Southern California.

High wind warnings and wind advisories are in effect Monday for large swaths of the region. Off shore, gale warnings are in place for mariners. Forecasters say gusts are expected to hit 65 mph in the Antelope Valley north of Los Angeles.

Surf topping 7 feet could pound beaches between LA and Santa Barbara counties.

As the system moved in from the north overnight, Kern County was battered by thunderstorms and hail.

The National Weather Service says parts of Southern California could see rain showers later in the week.
