Owner crashes into gas meter sparking fire to his mobile home

Firefighters were called out to fight a stubborn fire inside the Date Palm Country Club Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said they got a call around 1:15 p.m. of a crash and fire at a mobile home on Paseo Laredo North. The first unit on scene reported that a fire was burning outside the mobile home and a car crashed into the unit.

Firefighters on scene determined that the driver, the owner of the mobile home, hit the gas instead of the brake, sending him into the unit’s gas meter. The crash snapped the meter causing it to spark and catch the gas on fire.

The fire burned under the home and in the attic area causing significant damage. The owner was not hurt in the crash, but the Red Cross has been called in to help the man with lodging.

Crews from Palm Springs and Cal Fire were called in to help fight the blaze, a total of 30 firefighters were on scene says Cathedral City Fire officials. They cleared the scene around 4:15 p.m. and say the home is a total loss.
