The nation’s oldest man honored by the state
“He was born in 1906 —- 10 cents a gallon.”
It was a time with Theodore Roosevelt in office, and also one of the deadliest earthquakes in U.S. history rocking San Francisco. The birth year of Clarence Larry Matthews born May 1st, 1906 and now 110 years later he is alive and well in Indian Wells with the title as the country’s oldest man.
“It just happened, I have no feelings about it, I’m glad I am still alive.” Larry Matthews said.
Today Mr. Matthews was honored here in front of a big crowd in Indian Wells, with a resolution from the assembly.
“We have here in the Coachella Valley, the city of Indian Wells, the oldest verified living man in the US. It is very special for the community that we do have someone whose had an incredible journey of a life and we are here to honor him today,.”
“It’s wonderful to know somebody like him, and realize how great a person can be, and live as long as he has lived.” Maria Woelfl, a neighbor of Matthews for 42-years said.
“For breakfast I have a special K Cereal”
A resident of the valley since 1972, he has seen this area change and this world change like very few have, but Larry always has his golf game.
“I shot a 37 on the back-9 of Indian Wells, 1-over par.”
110-years of happiness and love for his family.
“I left the amount each January to my children and grand children. 9-people, the amount you could give without paying taxes”
