2 big rigs collide on I-10 causing travel headaches in Indio
Update 6:00: CHP says all lanes are now open.
The California Highway Patrol has issued a SIG ALERT after two big rigs crashed on eastbound I-10 near Jefferson Street Tuesday afternoon, blocking the left two lanes of the interstate.
The crash was reported at about 3:45 p.m. Eastbound traffic was backed up to Washington Street shortly after the crash. As of 5 p.m., officers reopened one lane and were expecting to have two more lanes back open within the next couple of hours.
Officers said the big rigs were lodged together and needed to be pulled apart. Nobody was injured in the crash and officers are working to clear the crash from the interstate as traffic continues to build.
According to CHP, a small pickup truck stalled out after malfunctioning on the interstate, causing vehicles to swerve around to avoid a collision. That ended up triggering a chain reaction involving a total of five vehicles, including the two big rigs and a Sunline Transit Bus.
Officers said one person was on the Sunline Bus. Although there were five vehicles involved in the crash, nobody was injured.
Drivers were asked to avoid eastbound I-10 throughout the early evening on Tuesday. You have a better chance of avoiding traffic by taking Varner Road at the time.
