Dozens turn out to presidential debate on the big screen

Supporters of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and at least one Donald Trump supporter joined together for a night of political theater.

Some grabbed popcorn and sodas before heading into theater No. 2 at the Regal Theaters in Palm Springs.

They weren’t going into see the next chapter in the Star Wars saga, but instead came to a free live screening of the final presidential debate before the election. The vast majority of people in attendance were Clinton supporters.

“I think it went really well. Trump kept bringing up things from the past and he kept bringing up her husband’s presidency and not looking at the present,” said Lee Shepard of Palm Springs.

The one Trump supporter that was willing to talk to me wasn’t impressed with Trump’s performance.

“I really don’t think he did very well, I really don’t think so, but I am supporting him because I really believe a lot of what he has to say. He is really negative, but I support him,” said Arnold Sarmel of Palm Springs.

Some people who are unable to vote because they’re not American citizens still enjoyed the show.

“I thought the moderator was fantastic and much better than the last two and my vote would go for Hillary if I was allowed to vote,” said Robert Loughman, a Canadian citizen.

Several votes said that they were turned off by both candidates and will be voting for a third-party candidate.

“You vote for what’s right. Not because it’s party lines, I quit doing that years ago. Even though ‘it’s throwing your vote away’ it’s still the right thing and that’s more important than anything,” said Kenny Keebaugh of Palm Springs.

The debate didn’t seem sway the vote of anyone who came out to watch the show at the theater. What people did seem to enjoy was the atmosphere. And there might not be a better way to wash down 90 minutes of political discourse then with a sweet cherry Icee.
