Immigration assistance office opens amid deportation scares
There have been a number of immigration scares across the Valley after President Donald Trump signed the executive order on immigration almost a month ago.
According to a draft memo obtained by the Associated Press the Trump administration is considering a proposal to mobilize National Guard troops to assist in deportation efforts.
The White House and Department of Homeland Security shot down the reports from the AP and DHS says the memo was drafted early on and was never seriously considered by the agency. “If they need the manpower, I don’t see anything wrong with it,” said one Valley resident, in response to the draft memo. Deportation fears have been high since President Trump signed the executive order on immigration and border security in January. “I come from parents who are immigrants. They’re U.S citizens now, but I do have family and friends and of course it’ll be tough for them cause we cannot just release people who we have bonds with,” said another local. Antonio Ayala, project director for Training Occupational Development Education Communities, which is an immigration rights legal center, announced the grand opening of their Coachella office, which is set to open S aturday, Feb.17 .
The center will be providing free assistance through the citizenship application process. T hose who qualify, can get their application fee waived.
