Family files claim against Palm Springs over deadly officer involved shooting
The family of a man shot and killed by a Palm Springs police officer on November 4, 2016, is filing a claim for damages against the city of Palm Springs.
The incident happened in the parking lot of the Rite Aid on South Palm Canyon Drive. The suspect, 26-year-old Abraham Ortiz was allegedly making threatening statements and shouting homophobic slurs before police shot and killed him during a struggle to detain him, according to police.
The attorney’s for the man’s family claim the two officers involved used excessive and unnecessary force, which violates state and federal law. They also allege that the Palm Springs Police Department ‘negligently hired, trained, supervised and retained their officers.”
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is still investigating the officers’ use of force.
