Man who created iconic symbol of LGBT rights dies
The man who created the most iconic symbol of gay rights has died.
Gilbert Baker was behind the rainbow flag. The designer died in his sleep in his apartment in Harlem Thursday.
Years ago, he was approached by then San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk to create something that would symbolize the LGBT community. Milk paid one thousand dollars for Baker’s work, which started in 1978.
A memorial was held Friday night for Baker. He was 65.
In memory of Baker, a rainbow flag flew at half-staff from the San Francisco mayor’s balcony over the week.
