Video shows suspect assaulting deputy while resisting arrest in Mecca

Man arrested following assault on a police officer after resisting arrest.

29-year-old, Thermal resident, Alejandro Parra De La Riva, was arrested and booked into the Riverside County Jail, located in the city of Indio for assault on a peace officer and assault with a deadly weapon causing bodily injury to a peace officer.

Deputies responded to a report of a disturbance at a business located in the 91200 block of Second Street in the unincorporated community of Mecca.

Deputies received information that a Hispanic male adult was causing a disturbance inside of the business, was aggressive towards an employee, and took some items without paying.

While investigating the incident, a deputy observed the suspect walking in the area of Fourth Street and Coahuilla Street. As the deputy attempted to detain the suspect the suspect resisted and a physical altercation ensued. During the altercation, a citizen stopped and assisted the deputy by restraining the suspect. Other deputies arrived and the suspect was detained.

As a result of the altercation, the deputy sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released. The suspect involved did not suffer any injuries.
