Mecca brush fire fully contained
A brush fire in Mecca Sunday afternoon burned through vegetation and close to structures.
As of 8:45 p.m., the fire had burned 48 acres and was 100% contained. At one point, more than 50 people had been evacuated. The structure threat has been mitigated and Paseo De Los Heroes Apartments are being repopulated.
“I wasn’t at the house and my brother in law called my saying there was a fire close to the house and he sent me a video with flames and all that. He told me, ‘You’ve got to come back and get the important things and get out of here’,” said Israel Hererra, an evacuee.
At about 6:00 p.m. the evacuation order was lifted and residents were able to return back to their homes. No structures were damaged.
“I’m pretty happy the fire’s off and I get to come back home and it’s still in tact,” said Fabion Perez, another evacuee.
The fire was reported just after 2:00 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Avenue 64 and Las Serenas Street. CHP officers said the fire was threatening nearby homes, and mandatory evacuations were, at one point, enforced. Resources will remain on scene over night.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
