5.3 Magnitude Aftershock Hits Mexicali Area

A magnitude-5.3 earthquake centered just south of the U.S.-Mexico border near Calexico rattled the Coachella Valley today but caused no injuries or structural damage.

The temblor, which struck at 9:44 a.m. with an epicenter about 32 miles south-southeast of Mexicali, was the latest in a series of hundreds of aftershocks from a 7.2-magnitude quake that rocked northern Baja California on Easter Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was felt by some in the desert cities, as well as in San Diego. Local public safety agencies reported no quake-related problems by midday.
