4.5 Earthquake Rattles Coachella Valley

A moderate earthquake hit the U.S. border in the Imperial Valley today, and was reportedly felt by people in the Coachella Valley and Orange and San Diego counties.

The 4.5 magnitude quake hit at 2:12 a.m and was epicentered 16 miles west southwest of Calexico.

People told the USGS that they felt the first quake in most San Diego County zip codes, as well as several cities in Orange County and the Coachella Valley.

Several quakes above 3.0 hit later in the day, including a 3.7 magnitude shock at 11:47 a.m.

Earlier in the day, a computer glitch at Caltech indicated a second 4.5 shaker occurred, but a Caltech spokeswoman said that was a false reading.

Hundreds of earthquakes in the magnitude 2.0 range have hit along the Laguna Salada Fault, as well as a few above 3.0. The quakes are generally hitting northwest of the epicenter for last Sunday’s magnitude 7.2 earthquake, which killed two people in Mexicali and caused more than $100 million in damage in California.
