California Date Becomes Star of Competition
Chefs from restaurants around the valley squared off on Saturday in an iron chef-style competition.
It was part of the 10th annual “Perfect Date Chef Challenge” at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
Nine local chefs whipped up creative dishes this weekend, hoping to win the title and a up to $2,000.
“I did smoked bacon wrapped pork stuffed with dates,” said William Withrow, executive sous-chef at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino.
Chef Withrow, a returning champ, was ooking for a repeat.
“Everyone hopes to win,” said Withrow.
The chefs use all kinds of meat, vegetables, fruits and starch, but every one must include the special ingredient — the famous California date.
“It’s our area, it’s what we have here,” said Yasmin Martin, chef at the Vintage Club.
Nine chefs competed. Three competed in the appetizer round, three in the entre round and three for dessert. They all had an hour and a half to create their masterpieces.
“Bacon and dates go well together,” said Oliver Wolf, J.W. Marriot Desert Springs chef.
Just how well it all comes together is for the panel of judges to decide.
“They’re all equally good,” said judge, Jackie Olden.
“It’s very tough, very tough,” said judge, Diane Harris Brown. “They are all so talented.”
Despite how tough it was, winners were selected. Here’s the list:
