4.8 Earthquake Rocks Southern California Overnight
A magnitude 4.8 earthquake was recorded about 18 miles west southwest of El Centro early today.
The quake struck at 3:55 a.m., according to preliminary information from the U.S. Geological Survey.
It was originally reported as a 4.7 magnitude, but revised stronger later in the morning.
USGS maps show the quake was felt in San Diego, throughout the Coachella Valley and in Banning.

This is the latest in a series of quakes to rock the region.
Monday evening, a 4.0 shook the area, followed by a smaller series in the 3s.
Thousands of aftershocks have hit Southern California since the Easter earthquake in Calexico that measured 7.2 in magnitude.
