Wrongway Driver Collides School Bus

A reportedly distraught driver went the wrong way on a freeway offramp in Pedley today, striking a school bus carrying seven children, in what may have been a failed suicide attempt, according to reports from the scene.

Neither the bus driver or any of the youngsters were injured in the crash, which occurred about 10:45 a.m. on the westbound state Route 60 exit ramp to Pedley Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses told the CHP the driver of a small gray sport utility vehicle was driving recklessly on Pedley Road before he drove into traffic leaving the freeway and caused the collision with the Jurupa Unified School District bus.

The unidentified driver had also stopped his vehicle on the freeway moments earlier and appeared ready to jump from an overpass, Fox11 reported.

The man’s vehicle was crushed in the collision with the bus, which sustained some front-end damage.

He was extracted from the wreckage and transported to a hospital with moderate injuries, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
