Candidates’ Hit Social Media In Final Days Of Election

are spending big money — in the final week of the election. the candidates and their supporters are also trying to spread their message — for free. newschannel 3 i-reporter erik sandoval joins us with a look how voters and politicans are cashing in — erik?? check your twitter account and your facebook page for updates…. so do the politicians. and with only 7 days left until you cast your ballot, the people who want your vote and their followers are heating up the internet like they never have before …. while politicians are literally spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on last-minute campaign ads in the days leading up to the election… …they’re also burning up the web trying to get your vote on sites we all visit on a daily – sometimes hourly basis. sites like facebook and twitter are all- a-twitter about the elections. democrats started the social media campaigning in the 2008 election on twitter. now, in 2010, both parties are immersed in making sure they’re seen on social media… and they could be giving the old fashioned polling system a run for its money.. take gubernatorial candidate meg whitman … in a poll over the weekend, it showed her down double digits against democrat jerry brown…. …polls like who “likes” her on facebook. take a look at how many fans she has. right now, whitman has nearly 182- thousand. jerry brown – almost less than half of that. it’s not scientific, but a good guage at a candidate’s popularity. in the race for senate, the polls show it neck- and-neck. not so when you look at how many fans each of the candidates has on their facebook pages. carly fiorina is trailing by nearly half. here’s an interesting note, too. three-fifths of americans are on facebook or twitter… 70- percent of those people intend to vote. so getting out the campaign message on social media has never been more important for a campaign. election day is next tuesday. news channel 3
