Palm Springs Police To Use Grant Money For DUI Enforcement

Palm Springs police will use a $165,000 state grant to help reduce drunken driving-related deaths and injuries, the department announced today.

The California Office of Traffic Safety funds will be used to pay for DUI checkpoints, warrant sweeps and patrols, according to police Sgt. Paul Abshire.

The grant will also help pay for public education programs about the dangers of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, Abshire said.

Nationwide, more than 10,800 people died last year in highway crashes involving a driver with a blood-alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. In California, 950 people died in alcohol-related crashes last year.
