Aftershocks Shake Southern California

A pair of aftershocks — one of them magnitude 3.4 — struck the Imperial Valley and eastern San Diego County today, according to automated seismographs and computers operated by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The 3.4 aftershock was centered about 35 miles south-southeast of Mexicali, or about 135 miles east-southeast of San Diego. It hit at 8:11 a.m.

Then at 8:27, a 3.0 magnitude quake hit the same general area.

Thousands of similarly-sized aftershocks have rattled the area since a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck 10 months ago, killing two people in Mexicali and severely damaging canals, schools and older buildings in Imperial County.
