City of Coachella Offers Low Interest Loans for Home Repairs and Improvements

In the city of Coachella, you don’t have to look too far to find homes that need repairs.

That’s why in about a month, the city will offer a total of $330,000 in low-interest loans to low-income residents who need to make home repairs and improvements.

“The dollars that come from the federal government will allow us to re-invest in our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Eduardo Garcia.

Garcia says roughly half the homes in the city are at least 20 years old, and some are 30 years old, so he’s looking forward to seeing improvements.

Owners can apply for the loans which come from federal Community Development Block Grant funds”.

Noelia Gonzalez received a $14,000 loan through the program about 5 years ago.

“I needed the bathroom made more accessible to my needs, and it was, and i’m very happy with it,” said Gonzalez.

Right now in the city, the maximum loan a homeowner can receive through the home improvement program is $75,000.

But, at Wednesday night’s city council meeting, the council is expected to set the limit at $30,000 so more homeowners, including those in mobile homes, can apply for the money.

Homeowners who apply for loans and agree to stay in their homes for the long term, won’t be required to re-pay their loans.

In some cases the loans can also be deferred.

The money can used for repairs on things like floors roofs, electrical wiring, plumbing, and air conditioning systems.

Gonzalez says she might apply for another loan for some work on her front door.

“I’m glad its coming back to help more people, and maybe me again,” said Gonzalez.

Residents in Coachella who want to apply for the loans can do so at City Hall.

The program runs until the $330,000 dollars is loaned.
