Earthquake Prep You May Not Think Of
On a scale of a one to a ten, how prepared do you feel for the big earthquake?
Practice all you want, but when the big quake hits southern California, you have to have what you need.
“The USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) has already told us that the Coachella Valley is overdue for an earthquake,” Jim Crotts of the Palm Springs Emergency Preparedness Committee said.
Having ample food and water on reserve is nothing new. However, the Outdoor Resorts Community in Cathedral City sponsored an Emergency Preparedness Expo showing the public what isn’t so obvious.
“If you have medical needs, (be sure) that you’re prepared to be self sufficient for a while,” Crotts said.
Another thing perhaps not packed in your survival kit?
“Money. ATMs, in all likelyhood, will be down. You’re going to lose electricity for a period of time,” he added.
If you’re not in your home — you need a whole other set of supplies. Frischer demonstrated some of his products.
“(If) you get trapped in your vehicle, what this does (is) it has a couple spikes on each end so you can smash a windshield with these spikes. It has a seatbelt cutter here,” Allen Frischer, owner of Survival Mode said.
What you need most may be prevalent, “We’ll have the ground water coming up. We have lakes out here, swamps,” Frischer said.
But, will it be drinkable?
“This filters up to 100 gallons of the worst water you can think of,” Frischer said.
During an earthquake, it’s more than likely that your cellphone and landline won’t work. When the big one hits, amateur radios may be the go-to form of communication.
“Initially, this probably will be the only means of communication,” John Polak of Amateur Radio said.
Amatuer radio is a way to communicate similar to cellphones but without being tied to the internet or cellphone towers. People came to peruse, and they left prepared.
“I think my wife and I will probably pick up a few of these survival kits while we’re here. They’re a good item to have in the house,” Doug Spaini said.
So, when the major one hits, how prepared will you be? Hopefully, a 10.
