High winds to develop in Coachella Valley overnight Tuesday
Wind gusts of 55 mph were expected in the Coachella Valley overnight Tuesday as a result of a weather disturbance and an increase in barometric pressure, said forecasters with the National Weather Service.
The winds were predicted to target the mountain passes, such as the San Gorgonio Pass on Interstate 10, when a wind advisory takes effect at 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
Stronger and more widespread wind was in the forecast for Friday, a NWS bulletin read.
The wind advisory for the greater Palm Springs area will last from 10 p.m Tuesday to 5 p.m. on Wednesday when northwest winds were forecast to increase to speeds of 10-to-20 mph overnight at reach sustained strength of 30 mph on Wednesday.
Motorists — especially those driving high-profile vehicles, such as trucks — were warned to drive carefully as the wind and blowing sand could bring visibility in some parts of the region down to 1 mile or less.
