Dancing With the Stars comes to the desert
‘Like that, but gracefully’: story of my dancing life.
“Getting asked to do Dancing With the Desert Stars was a mini dream come true. Anyone who knows me knows that it is a big goal of mine to someday be on the real ABC show. I think this is a step in the right direction.”
However, I’ve taken some steps in the wrong direction learning the tango and cha cha with my dance professional, Josh King.
“That one (the tango) you have to be very strong and stiff and balanced. I trip 17 times walking from the newsroom to the studio, no joke. So that’s more of a challenge, but the cha cha is more my personality.”
Good news though, this isn’t my first rodeo on the dance floor.
“I do have dance experience. I danced in high school on Varsity Poms, and I danced for my sorority in college,”
Bad news, though – ballroom is a whole other ball game.
“Dancing with a partner is definitely very different. As the female half of the partner you have to be submissive, which is sometimes challenging for me.”
I feel I have two major challenges with ballroom dancing.
“First off, my laugh coming out when it’s not supposed to. And secondly, my control issues.”
“Bianca’s got a lot of personality, but she has to let me lead,” dance professional Josh King said. “She has some control issues, she loves to be in control, which isn’t so good when you’re being thrown around in a tango.”
Being a type-a personality has some benefits, too, though.
“She has great ideas, loves to work hard, loves to push herself, so it’s much easier for me,” King said.
The show features colorful personalities, and from what I’ve heard, some really great dancers. Which, I say, is good.
“Being the best is defined by beating the best, so I’m looking forward to the competition.”
The event raises money for the “100 women” of Desert Aids Project. 100 Women helps keep women and children living with, affected by, or at-risk for HIV or AIDS living longer and stronger.
