Final Results: 36th Congressional Race
Nearly three weeks after voters went to the polls, Riverside County posted its final election results today.
The final tally shows Democratic emergency room doctor Raul Ruiz
collected 12,236 votes more than Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, in the
race to represent the redrawn 36th Congressional District. Ruiz had 52.94
percent of the vote, compared to Bono Mack’s 47.06 percent, according to the
totals released by the Registrar of Voters.
The race had been too close to call on election night, but Ruiz
gradually widened his lead as mail-in, provisional and damaged ballots were
counted. Bono Mack, R-Palm Springs, conceded Nov. 9, signaling the end of her
14 years in public office. Bono Mack was elected to congress in 1998, following the death of her husband and former congressman Sonny Bono, in a skiing accident.
Her current husband, Florida Congressman Connie Mack also lost his election last week. He was running for U.S Senate in Florida.
