Fire forces 11 Indio residents from homes

A fire damaged two apartment units in Indio Wednesday night and although no injuries were reported, two families were displaced.

The blaze broke out for unknown reasons about 5:30 p.m. in the 82400 block of Requa Avenue. Firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from a ground-floor unit and evacuated people from the building, said Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jody Hagemann.

Cause of the fire was under investigation, Hagemann said.

Because of the intensity of the fire, additional firefighters had to be called, she said.

The American Red Cross was called to help provide shelter for eight adults and three children who were displaced.
