Homes destroyed by Ventura County wildfires
Pushed by powerful winds, a wildfire swept across orchards and open fields in Ventura County, destroying two homes and threatening about 100 more.
County fire officials say the fire began with a burning mobile home at about 3:15 p.m. Monday then spread to brush, bearing down on a neighborhood in Fillmore and burning a large home amid gusts of 40 mph.
No injuries have been reported.
Fire spokesman Tom Kruschke says about 400 firefighters from several agencies were taking on the 170-acre blaze, and hoped to take advantage of much calmer late-night winds to start to contain it. He says about 100 homes are threatened, and an evacuation center has been opened at the Fillmore Memorial Building.
About 80 homes were evacuated.
