Coachella Festival: 33 Arrests

A total of 33 people were arrested on the first day of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, said police.

The majority of the arrests were for alcohol- or drug-related violations, said Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron.

One person was arrested for assault, the result of a minor altercation
between two people, he said.

There was one alcohol-related arrest overnight Thursday into Friday, the
first night of camping, he said.

Roughly eight people were taken to hospitals for various medical issues on day one, Guitron said, but he did not have exact numbers or details of the medical problems.

Traffic flow was good, with only minor tie-ups, mostly thanks to road improvements made around the festival grounds over the past several years, he
said.

The festival at the Empire Polo Club continues through Sunday with a reprise April 19-21.
