Numerous accidents have police investigating stretch of road

Mary walks 10 miles a day, so she knows Cathedral City streets like the back of her hand.

“Even if I’m on a sidewalk, I hate walking with my back to the traffic. Sometimes I’ll cross over and, even if I’m on the street, at least I’m facing traffic,” Mary said.

A recent accident made her even more fearful of the roads she walks.

“About four to six weeks ago, there was a deadly accident and I saw through my window flashing lights and that’s what woke me up,” Mary said.

It was a deadly hit and run that happened in April just east of Golf Club Drive, killing a bicyclist. A few months before that, a pedestrian was struck and killed near the same area.

“His life ended, the guy took off, and apparently now they’re trying to do the measuring and everything to find out exactly what happened,” Mary said.

Mary watcheD as Cathedral City Police conduct a police investigation on that stretch of the street.

“It’s wonderful. I’m glad they’re doing that. Something needs to be done. They really drive really fast out here” Mary said.

Cathedral City Police closed the westbound lanes of East Palm Canyon Drive between Cree Road and Golf Club Drive from 4 a.m. to 10 Sunday. Police say they’re conducting an ongoing traffic accident investigation. The investigation involved measurements, photographs and graphing of manhole covers, curbs, gutters and light poles.

“Something needs to be done. I don’t really know what the answer is, they just gotta slow down,” Mary said.
