Parkway 1e11 project to announce official name tonight
The first public workshop about a proposed trailconnecting Coachella Valley cities will be held tonight in Palm Springs.
The meeting for the Parkway 1e11 project is at 5:30 p.m. at theCoachella Valley Economic Partnership, 3111 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. The 52-mileparkway is meant to be used by pedestrians, bicyclists and small electric vehicles such as golf carts.
Attendees can meet one-on-one with project managers, ask questions andgive feedback. They will also be among the first to hear about the parkway’snew name, according to Palm Springs city spokeswoman Amy Blaisdell.
The trail will go along the Whitewater River from Palm Springs to theSalton Sea, using existing parts of paved trail. Some sections will needengineering and analysis that may take up to a decade, according to theCoachella Valley Association of Governments.
The trail will provide about $1.5 billion in economic benefits and willcreate about 700 permanent jobs. It will help relieve congestion on Highway111, improve air quality, help tourism and give people a way to exercise, according to CVAG.
More than $47 million in funding has been secured for the project, whichis projected to cost around $70 million. The funding is from sourcesincluding the state Strategic Growth Council, South Coast Air QualityManagement District, CVAG and Desert Healthcare District, according to CVAG.
