Operation Splash helps families in need
Kids aren’t the only ones making a splash this summer. For the sixth year in a row, Kaiser Permanente donated $50,000 to the Desert Recreation District.
“Because we believe in safety in the water, this will help in getting dozen lifeguards trained,” Richard Rajaratnam of Kaiser Permanente said.
It will also let the Desert Recreation District offer free swim passes and lessons to children in low income families through operation splash.
The passes work at Pawley Pool in Indio, Bagdouma Pool in Coachella, and Mecca Pool in Mecca.
“Fifty thousand dollars is an incredible amount , to be able to utilize this program and get anyone who wants to enjoy the ability to come out,” Indio city council member Glenn Miller said.
The idea is to keep kids active and healthy despite the summer heat. Darlene Bowman loves watching her granddaughter in the water.
“Summer is here, unmerciful as anyone who lives here knows. This is just fantastic to be able to come here and cool off and the kids are really enjoying themselves,” Bowman said
With Kaiser Permanente’s donation, more people have access to the refreshing water.
“It helps a whole lot of families, when there are a lot of children involved. Income may not be as high. Passes at some pools can be very costly. This gives relief to the parents, relief to the kids, and it’s a good community event,” Bowman said.
