Social media sounds off on DOMA/Prop 8 rulings

Social media erupted Wednesday following the court’s decisions to strike down Prop 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act, or DOMA.

Tweets with #DOMA, #prop8, and #loveislove were all trending in the Twittersphere after #SCOTUS handed two monumental victories to same-sex marriage couples and supporters.
Many locals, celebs and leaders including president Barack Obama tweeted, “Today’s DOMA ruling is a historic step forward for #marriageequality.”

Local leader Sen. Barbara Boxer wrote, “I was proud to have voted against #DOMA in 1996 & it’s so heartening to see that the fed gov’t will now treat all marriages equally.”

Even celebrities got into the act, Actress Kristen Bell proposed to fiance Dax Shepard after DOMA overturned.
In August the two put wedding plans on hold until the ruling and said, “It’s just kind of rude to invite everyone to a party for a right not everyone can hold.”

In the Facebook world, Valley neighbors changed their profile pictures and posted photos in support of gay marriage and equality.

The occasion of the rulings were encouragement for some desert natives to not only announce a wedding date, but for others to finally “come out” to friends and family.

However, not everyone is on board. Some users said “traditional marriage” is the way it should be, marriage is a sacrament: It should be reinforced, not redefined.

Whether you’re for or against, marriage equality is now becoming a reality.
