Domestic violence dispute leads to officer involved shooting in Banning

A Banning police officer shot at a suspect who broke free from him during a domestic violence call early Sunday, but missed, police said.

Police were dispatched at 2:30 a.m. to a home in the 1200 block of Hargrave Street where officers found a woman who had been beaten. Johnny Ray

Vaughan, 31, was identified as the man suspected of assaulting the woman, according to the Banning Police Department.

Vaughan was being handcuffed but bolted, police said. An officer chased after him into an alley, and gunfire erupted, police said.

No one was hit but police reported Vaughan fell during the chase and was arrested. The woman was treated for her injuries at the scene, police said.

Banning police did not indicate whether the officer who opened fire was, but he was placed on paid administrative leave. It was also unclear what specific events led the officer to draw his weapon.

Online jail records showed Vaughan remained in custody today, and bail arrangements, charges or an arraignment hearing were not indicated.
