Driver killed in side impact collision on 60 near I-10
A 72-year-old Beaumont man was killed today when hepulled in front of a pickup truck on the Moreno Valley (60) Freeway, resultingin a collision that left another motorist seriously injured, authorities said.
The wreck happened at the Western Knolls Avenue crossing of the 60 about8:50 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
The victim, whose name was unavailable this afternoon, was trying tocross the 60 going south on Knolls, which goes across all four lanes of thefreeway — with stop signs on the north and south sides of the road — lessthan a half-mile from where the 60 transitions to Interstate 10.
According to the CHP, the victim pulled his 1999 Toyota Camry into thewestbound lanes of the 60, apparently without seeing an oncoming 2006 GMCpickup. The larger vehicle slammed into the driver’s side of the Camry,crumpling it and causing significant damage to the truck, the CHP said.
The Camry driver died at the scene.
The pickup driver, a 52-year-old Whittier man whose name was withheld,was rushed to Riverside County Regional Medical Center with the CHP calledmajor injuries.
