Valley neighbors working hard this Labor Day

While many businesses closed their doors to celebrate Labor Day, others were hard at work. Boy’s Hamburgers in Cathedral City was one of them with the grills fired up and doors open to serve hungry customers this holiday.

“Luckily we were blessed to be busy. I had to come in and call my family, my wife and my kids to come and help out,” said manager Orlando Lomeli.

According to new survey data from Bloomberg BNA and Beyond.com, 39% of employers were expected to be open for business. Epidemic Skateboard Shop on Ramon Rd. was no different.

“I’m actually not supposed to be working today, but it’s been so busy with the back-to-school rush, I came in to help everybody,” said owner Glen Coy.

Labor Day is celebrated to commemorate the “social and economic achievements of the American worker.”

Enjoying the time off, Raul Romero, of Cathedral City, wanted to show his appreciation.

“We’re going to go to my grandma’s house and then go see my mom at her job. try to enjoy the day.”

Lomeli’s 12-year-old daughter Jasmine said her favorite part of the holiday was helping out her dad.

“We wash dishes, clean tables and take food to the tables,” she said.

However, the day wasn’t all work and no play. Lomeli said a family barbeque was planned after their long day of work.

“On Labor Day it’s good to recognize the hard workers in the day field. We’d like to say thank you to all of the hard workers,” he said.
