Pedestrian killed while crossing busy Indio roadway
A pedestrian was killed Wednesday morning after he was hit by a motorist in a pick-up truck.
It happened just before 6 a.m. on Monroe Street, south of Doctor Carreon Boulevard.
The man whose name hasn’t been released, died at the scene. Police say he was in the middle of the street when he was hit.
The driver stopped and is cooperating with the police investigation.
Police are looking into whether the man who was killed was jaywalking at the time of the crash.
“Most people think all pedestrians are going to have the right of way no matter where they at, so why did the driver hit him, what was the driver doing, that’s not always the case,” said Indio Police spokesman, Ben Guitron. “The vehicle code in California holds the pedestrian and the person driving equally responsible when crossing or doing things on the road.”
Monroe Street was closed south of Doctor Carreon for a few hours during the investigation.
