La Quinta city leaders to consider sales tax hike
The La Quinta City Council will consider a ballot measure Tuesday evening that would raise the city’s sales tax if voters approve the measure on a ballot referendum in November.
The money would benefit city priorities which were impacted when state lawmakers and the governor eliminated redevelopment agencies around California to balance the state budget.
Still to be decided, how hight the higher sales tax would go up.
Proposals vary from 1/4 percent to 1 percent.
The measure would bring in up to 7$ million a year for the city.
Voters in Palm Springs and Cathedral City both recently approved similar tax hikes.
The La Quinta City Council has until August to decide whether to put the tax hike measure on the public ballot.
The council is set to meet at 3:00 p.m.
